Enabling Custom Practice
print icon

To enable Custom Practice, follow these steps:

  1. Open Console and use the left-hand navigation to go to the Settings section.

  1. Go to Feature Accesses, locate the Enable Custom Practice Session Feature and toggle it ON. This will turn this feature on at the tenant level, but you’ll also need to turn it on at the individual course level.

  1. To turn Custom Practice on at the course level navigate to BluePrint and go to Courses.

  1. Select the course you want to add Custom Practice to.

  2. On the next page, select the Configuration option underneath Course Details section.

  1. Use the toggle to switch Enable Custom Practice Session Feature ON for this course.

The Custom Practice feature is also controllable at the Institution/Branch level. Click here to learn how to enable feature accesses at a Branch level.

  1. Open the Tenant Dashboard and use the left-hand navigation to go to the Institutions section.

  1. Select the institution you want to add Custom Practice to.

  1. On the next page, select the Manage Features button.

If a learner is part of an Institution/Branch the feature access has to be toggled on all applicable levels (tenant, course and specific institution/branch).

Custom Practice is compatible with both the Structured and Adaptive Study Plans. Note that, after turning on Custom Practice, the platform will treat practice question-based Study Tasks as custom practice sessions. This does not change the value or format of the Study Plan as a whole.

Best Practices

To make the most of the Custom Practice feature, consider the following tips:

  • Make sure your course has a wide pool of practice questions.

The Custom Practice feature only uses practice questions. If a question is part of a test, this question will NOT be available for Custom Practice.

Custom Practice is also more effective the more practice questions are in a course. Having a large practice question pool ensures learners can make the most of the feature and reduces the chance they’ll encounter the same content over and over again. While there is no minimum question requirement to enable Custom Practice, courses with 100 or more practice questions will benefit the most from this feature.

  • The Show question difficulty to the user feature is enabled at a course level by default. Reach out to BenchPrep if you would like to toggle the feature access OFF.

Enabling this feature allows learners to add questions to their custom practice session based on difficulty. As learners attempt practice questions, the BenchPrep platform uses their data to assign each question one of four difficulty ratings: “Easy,” “Moderate,” “Difficult,” or “Expert.” These difficulty ratings can change over time based on learner data.

If you’re creating a new course, the BenchPrep team can pre-load difficulty ratings for your questions if you have existing data on their difficulty. For more information, check out our article here. Difficulty rating of questions are replicated only in case of Full course replication, and not when selected questions are replicated. If you do not have existing difficulty data, we recommend hiding question difficulty levels for the first month after the course’s launch. This will allow time for the platform to collect difficulty data based on real learners’ question attempts. After a month, enough data should exist to assign each question an accurate difficulty rating.

When the “Show question difficulty to the user” feature is off, all questions will receive the “Expert” difficulty rating by default.

Locales

There are several editable locales specific to Custom Practice. Not all of these locales are present in Console, so if you’d like to change these locales, reach out to your BenchPrep contact.

The screenshots below show which locales specific to Custom Practice are editable:
