1. Intro to the Adaptive Study Plan

The Adaptive Study Plan is a personalized study plan through your course content. Unlike the Structured Study Plan, which guides learners through course content in a linear path, the Adaptive Study Plan provides an individualized learning path through the course content based on a learner’s performance in practice questions and the importance of Knowledge Sets.

When using the Adaptive Study Plan, the learner takes a pre-assessment that informs our platform of that learner’s strengths and weaknesses. Then, based on the importance values (or exam weightings) that you’ve given us, our platform rearranges the content based on that learner's individual needs.

The content in an Adaptive Study Plan is arranged by Knowledge Sets.  A Knowledge Set is a competency-based content group created for the Adaptive Study Plan based on categories or subcategories of practice questions. The pre-assessment that a learner takes is created by the system selecting 5 questions per Knowledge Set based on difficulty level, importance values, and learner performance.

  • The more granular a Knowledge Set can be (e.g., Geometry rather than Math), the more valuable the Adaptive Study Plan will be.
  • The more practice questions within a Knowledge Set, the more accurate the Adaptive Study Plan will be.
  • The number of practice questions available at the category or subcategory level dictates the level the Knowledge Sets can be created at (i.e., if not all subcategories have enough questions, the Knowledge Set must be created based on the category level).
  • A Knowledge Set is composed of some combination of the following content types:
    • Practice Questions (required)
    • Lessons (optional, but recommended)
    • Flashcards (optional, but recommended)

For each Knowledge Set, our plan follows the lesson → flashcard → practice questions approach before moving to the next category. When a learner is ready for a test, they can select Test Your Knowledge.

To create an Adaptive Study Plan, you'll need to work with our Support Team.  First, ensure your content meets the following requirements:

  • Your Course has been created

  • Your courses' content is complete

  • Your course has at least 20 practice questions per category

  • You have identified the following:

    • The names of the Knowledge Sets you wish to create

    • The importance values for each Knowledge Set

Review Configuring an Adaptive Study Plan to configure your Adaptive Study Plan.

Recommendations:

  • Adaptive Study Plans are not required and learners can complete a course without one. When building your first course, we recommend you use a Structured Study Plan.

  • As you collect feedback from your users, you can decide if an Adaptive Study Plan is right for you.

What the Adaptive Study Plan Does Not Do

Keep the following limitations in mind when considering an Adaptive Study Plan for your course:

  • The adaptive engine cannot be configured to serve up questions in a particular order.  It serves up questions based on performance and difficulty level, and selects from the questions added to each knowledge set.
  • The Adaptive Study Plan cannot be configured to serve up specific questions in preference of one over another.
  • The Adaptive Study Plan does not create the same pre-test each time for each learner; it instead responds to learner performance.
  • The Adaptive Study Plan cannot test all question topics possible to add within a Knowledge Set; Knowledge Sets need to be granular enough that the 5 questions selected for the pre-assessment for each topic provide a meaningful assessment of performance.
  • The number of questions served up in the pre-test is controlled by the number of knowledge sets; the Adaptive Study Plan engine cannot be customized to change the number of questions.
